A Message From Our Executive Director

While some may say I’m crazy and others may argue that I need to see a therapist, I am still completely unashamed to admit that I genuinely love getting cussed out. As wild as that may seem, it is truly one of my all-time favorite parts of my job. You can blame my red hair, can question if this is because I was raised in downtown Atlanta, and can even say it’s because I have a spicy flair at times. Regardless, when a resident cusses me out, I view it as a badge of honor and a truly exciting experience.

You see, when ladies reach the point of feeling they need to cuss you out, they have already endured so much trauma and pain that oftentimes, other words fail them. They have reached a point of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual exhaustion and sometimes, they just need to let it all out.

Don't get me wrong, I’m not saying we just let ladies and young girls walk around cussing each other out left and right. That’s not it at all. If a resident is having an outburst of rage, anger, or frustration and I am able to listen and process with them, more times than not, we are able to pinpoint all of that animosity to a place of trauma or a trigger. Some of my absolute favorite days at HOC have been where I’ve been called names that would make a sailor blush because I’ve gotten to respond with love, grace, and a safe place for them to land.

That’s what it is about for me – creating a safe environment for survivors to catch their breath, to process, to grieve, to heal, to laugh, to cry, and to dream again. To see them finally experience freedom to be themselves, to watch as the passion is reignited behind their eyes, to show them daily them that they deserve the life of hope and healing they had so desperately been longing for.

I was cussed out just this week and it truly made me smile. We were able to meet this individual’s real and raw emotion, pain, and heartache with another chance, a reminder of her worth, and time to grab a coffee, sit with a clinician, and begin to truly unpack the layers upon layers of trauma she had experienced. This individual is still fighting for her sobriety and healing – this moment wasn’t an epiphany or a life-altering experience but this week, like every week at HOC, we had the privilege of showing a warrior woman what it felt like to be seen, heard, and valued.

As you join hands, join hearts, and join this fight for freedom, you won’t be getting cussed out – don’t worry! We will handle that part. But you DO get to be a part of the incredible transformation that takes place when a survivor finds hope, healing and true happiness.

Summer Fun

Summer at House of Cherith has already been one to remember! Thanks to generous volunteers and our incredible staff our residents have been pampered with salon days and shopping sprees, we have spent time out in nature horseback riding and gardening, spent a day relaxing at the lake, enjoyed yummy meals, and spent time at our retreat house!

We've also had incredible volunteer groups support House of Cherith by building donation bags, performing for our residents, and helping organize our Dream Boutique and clothing closet!

Story of Hope

"House of Cherith was no doubt a second chance at the life I was meant to have. It has prepared me with the tools to succeed and the motivation to become the mother and the woman I always knew I could be. I know I haven’t seen everything yet; I can only imagine how God plans to use me. I want my testimony to be more than my miracle; I want to use my story to tell other young girls all that HOC has done for me. I want them to know they are loved, worth it, and capable of overcoming their struggles.

Only God knows how grateful I am for all that HOC has done for me. I now have a home for my 4-year-old daughter and my 17-year-old son. And I know “He” is still working in me."
